I enjoy reading books about world war II for various reasons. I read that this one was about world war II and immediately picked it up and I love that it was a different perspective than a lot of the books that are out there where it's the Russian side and a woman sniper. It was a very good book, hard to put down
I never hesitate to pick up a Kate Quinn historical fiction. This is my fourth read by her and it absolutely met my expectations. The research, the carefully crafted characters, the interwoven timelines, and the suspense—it's her hallmark formula and she better not ever what's working!
What I liked:
Quinn is adept with multiple POVs and this one had a quirk: First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt's POV was sprinkled throughout using short notes that read like diary entries. This periodic break read like Quinn was sprinkling little bread crumbs of historical context as we shifted gears between storylines.
What I loved:
I don't care if I say this in every review for Quinn—I LOVE the forgotten, invisible, and overlooked diamonds-in-the-rough that she digs out of history. Mila Pavlichenko (aka Lady Death aka Badass Sniper) is truly singular and I believe this novel does right by her.

I’ve enjoyed Kate Quinn books. But this one is not good. I didn’t connect with the characters. The plot with the assassin felt contrived.

Historical fiction, but so interesting due to main character being a Russian woman. Really enjoyed.
