hm okay. i liked most of the stories from the first half of the novel but some of the themes were recurrent and not in a way that provides deeper insight. that common theme being the dynamic between parent and child; the lengths they go to to keep each other safe, the sensitivity of their relationship and how closely related their love is to hate. it was a bit daunting considering most endings were predictable. one other thing i'd like to mention is how the author frequently incorporates LGBT characters. I understand that he himself is a gay man but the representation often seemed to force its way into the story and it ended up feeling more contrived than natural. each time the author mentioned how the character had a same-sex relationship, it was met with an eye roll. this is my second time reading this author and despite both novels being mediocre, i'm still inclined to read more.
