Dumb Witness

This is classic Christie: an old lady dying under suspicious circumstances, an array of possible suspects, and a sleight of hand that ensures you won't beat Poirot to solving the crime. I figured out the piece about the brooch right away so Poirot's attempts to get Hastings to understand felt belabored, but I still wasn't able to fit who was on the stairs into the larger narrative of what happened. I enjoyed the read.

I love Agatha Christie sm- this book falls somewhere in the middle of the ranking for me with her books (so far), but Poirot is so fun.

I found this one slightly duller than some of her others, just because it was a lot of travel + interviewing + review and less IMMEDIATE suspense. still solid though! Happy to report that this was the closest I’ve come to solving a case

Poirot is casting about for something to do so of course he promptly receives a letter from a woman suspecting she is going to be a victim of murder. When he goes to investigate, he finds that she has recently died! Nothing for it but to take the case! I was kind of expecting Bob the dog (and Hastings - even though he was narrating I forgot that he was there a few times) to have a bit more to do, but overall a solid Poirot tale.

It’s a decent murder mystery. The introduction is cool. But once Poirot gets involved, half of the book is spent rediscovering information we already know. Also Bob should’ve played a larger role. He’s obviously the best character.

Another solid Poirot mystery. It’s been fun to read the less well-known entries in this series. In this one an elderly aunt sends a letter to Poirot but it is not received until after her death. Many family members are suspected and her dog, Bob, has a starring role.
