Awesome book to read with a 5th grade class!! Especially as a class novel / read aloud. The figurative language is great and there are many teachable moments and places for rich discussion with students. Definitely a 5/5 class novel that opens up discussion. I read this with a 5th grade class but I think with older kids this book can be read and discussed at a deeper level (especially with the white character Maniac being the main character of the story and what that can mean- I think this can be a good discussion and place where students can read a text more critically. In my current lesson we focused on different things but I think it’s a good topic of discussion for any grade level ). Great book and one I will teach again!
