Short, confusing little graphic novel. The art is lovely (I really like the Watercolor aspect of it) but the story ends abruptly and some of the events (the one regarding Ursa and her brother, not to be more spoilery) is very nonsensical.

Slow Storm demonstrates Novgorodoff's strengths as a visual story teller that her other graphic novel, The Undertaking of Lily Chen, did not. Short and bittersweet, but satisfying.

It is at least pretty. I'll give it that. The narrative is decent, if not a little too simplistic.

I know I know I keep promising to stop reviewing :01 and RB books, but THIS IS AMAZING. DANICA IS AMAZING. This is her first book and holy moly! It's so stunning in story, literary layers, and art. In sales meetings they kept saying this was "the great american graphic novel" and for once I think those sales people are telling the truth! FIND IT. READ IT NOW. I promise you will thank me for it.

In this graphic novel, Ursa, a firefighter, crosses paths with Rafi, a Mexican immigrant. It's the story of a brief encounter between two people. Full of symbolism, with a touch of magic realism, it's a very interesting book to discover.

This story starts of with a strong premise and a few interesting characters; I liked the uniqueness of the setting and how different "neighbors" enter each others space and the power dynamics illustrated. I think it either needed to be longer or shorter but I don't know which.
