this is the type of book with a main character that id typically have a penchant to hate. and yet i loved this so incredibly dearly. it felt incredibly paced and coming of age adjacent but not in an overwhelming or perturbing way? the main character was so deeply flawed but in a way that followed a logical train of sense such that i couldnt even fault it. it felt critical and also light and conscious of difference while remaining interesting ? it felt alive like i felt myself immersed in the story. i particularly loved the sapphic elements which felt so real and true to life and there were so many beautiful lines and sentiments and it ended on the perfect kind of cliffhanger where it wasnt really but it kind of was. it was structured well. it had like good and fair bi representation. the male mc was like frustrating but by the end understandable? and idk it just felt like an alive book. and the audiobook was incredibly well done such that the characters felt real and with me and the decisions felt actual and not fictive like i was watching it in live. i don't know. i just so so enjoyed this. like i can truly think of no critiques. like even though i have critiques of the characters actions and the way they went about things and i wouldn't do everything they did for sure i felt like so satisfied with the ending and the pacing and the novel writ large. it felt Irish and also not? it exposed me to new things? and i loved it. idk. 5 stars man.

Exciting Times has been marketed as a book to give Sally Rooney's Normal People a run for its money, so in hindsight I should have known I wouldn't like it... Its protagonist Ava moves from Dublin to Hong Kong to teach children English. While there, she meets Julian, and over the course of some months they begin sleeping together but don't actually commit to a formal relationship. When Julian leaves for a job in London and Ava meets Edith, someone who makes her feel all the things Julian never could, the choice should be easy. But when he suddenly returns, Ava finds herself unable to decide between them... read the full review here: https://www.amybucklesbookshelf.co.uk/2021/06/exciting-times-book-review/
defo got better as it went on but ended on such a cliffhanger?? literally thought my book was missing some pages
Not as exciting as the title says but I enjoyed reading it nonetheless.
i spent most of this book wishing it would end sooner ..... a pointless and plotless read + a very unlikable protagonist. the entirety of the novel is filled with the protagonist droning on and on about her two love interests + her political ramblings without actually delving into anything meaningful. Wish the protagonist had a hobby or something lol
