Too much internal pondering that was repetitive and negative or apathetic, very monotone energy.

Exciting Times is an interesting novel. We follow Ava, through the author’s diary-style writing, as she navigates an important year in her early 20s and determines for herself what she wants in love and in life. This emotional examination is undertaken using 2 prospective love interests, a slightly older man, Julian and a woman of her age, Edith. Through her relationships with these 2 characters, Ava must determine what is important to her in life, especially in her life that is caught in the social and economic malaise of late-stage capitalism. An Irish immigrant in Hong Kong, with weak family connections and no deep friendships, these relationships examine why Ava is the way she is.

As the novel progresses, Ava discovers 2 sides to her character and toward the end, she makes a decision about which side she prefers.

Ava’s character development from cold, aloof, sarcastic and feigned disinterest to emotional, invested and afraid of loss is a great journey to follow and as a older reader, I am reminded how important it is to give yourself fully to love when you are younger regardless of the consequence. It also shows the importance of experiencing your life with your peers and how community and emotional entanglements can be difficult in a hyper-productive, interconnected yet uninvested world.

The story and the themes are enjoyable and poignant. I rated this lower because I struggled to get through this book. At some point, I became exhausted with Ava’s stream of consciousness and how there were no high points in the novel. This is most likely a reflection of my reading tastes. And especially since the stakes were never high, I got bored from the middle of the book being in Ava’s mind.

All in all, it is a good book.
