This was interesting - I didn’t love or hate it tbh left feeling mostly indifferent.
So many of the more negative reviews of this book hark on the fact that Sally Rooney endorsed this and ‘it’s another version of Normal People’ (First, how dare you? That book is gold and second that’s bs lol)
And there are valid complaints ab this book imo but… this is not a book, despite the title (which is meant to be ironic, lmao) that is exciting. It is supposed to be mundane and existential and frustrating.
And a lot of those tenets stem from how Irish literature works.
These are facets of traditional Irish writing - the observation of class, the brooding, the political commentary, the maddening yet genius stream of consciousness style writing, the apathetic characters, the shitty communication - that people simply do not know how to grasp when an Irish book like NP or ET goes viral w the general pop. (This one in particular is one that trends in books to read in your 20s.)
Which is fine. I’m not saying you need an English lit degree to love these books but there’s a reason they read the way they do that the general population doesn’t seem to know about.
Anyway that aside I did enjoy the humor from Ava. It’s very dry, but it works, and if she wasn’t such a wild narrator I probably wouldn’t have finished this book. It’s also very witty and I liked the ending, which was unexpected.
But it didn’t entirely grab me either. The first 40 pages were brutal to get through and I thought I would DNF but alas here we are.
Wouldn’t readily rec unless you have background on Irish lit otherwise you will loathe it.
