What an atrocious, miserable, mean-spirited pile of hot garbage.

(TW: This review mentions SA and child abuse)

I expected a twisty, tense horror-thriller and instead I got shitty writing and uninteresting characters. Not even the kills were original or fascinating. There was nothing fun or witty or unique about the plot, the motivation of the killers, or the movement of the story.

Laymon’s descriptions of the children at the center of the story are borderline pedophilic, from his weird lingering on the sexual tension between his 12- and 16-year-old protagonists, to the graphic scenes of child r*pe throughout.

And good lord, the snoozy pace! I ended up skipping through about 1/3 of the book to get to the end. And the only reason I bothered with that was because I am physically incapable of NOT finishing a book.

Don’t waste your time on this awful, boring, gross novel.
