The Demon Court by Emma Hamm. I wanted to love it just how it starts off I had so much hope for this book but its like were eternally lost in thoughts where we just read she made me h*** I was h*** she was different and the plot just disappears. I love smut as much as the next person, but i need story too otherwise I'd be looking specifically for erotica. Even then this really couldn't be classified as that.
There is a lot of talk about how they are demons in this book but they aren't. Their spirits so the contradiction between that kept throwing me off a lot. Despite this book being THICK the ending was over too quickly which was disappointing because it's the parts where we get some real story. We have our big betrayal and our sad parts but for a book this thick it was over with the snap of a finger.
We spend most of our time just reading about how shes containing emotions under a lake of like ice and slowly releasing them. Greed comes to visit hearing about this woman and even then it didn't really pick up. This book was a ridiculously fast read for me and I think a lot of it stemmed down to I felt like I was basically rereading the same scenes with different wording chapter after chapter for a decent chunk.
I didnt hate this book because it did have good bits to it but I also did not enjoy it. I came out feeling indifferent, maybe even slightly disappointed.

It was fine, not bad but not great. Spicy, but not as much as you might expect.
This was sooo good. I loved Lust's character so much and how he was just unabashedly him.

Lots of thoughts about this. Over all this was way too long for not much going on and it wasn't for me (which feels like whiplash because I have liked other works by this author). Why didn't I DNF? I don't know, maybe partly spite maybe partly wanting to see if it got better. I also went into this with high hopes and was excited about the concept.
We don't really go anywhere once we get to the Demon Court, and while there nothing much happens. I love the setting, the floating aisles, the demons running their kingdoms, and I think the concept was cool. The execution was not done very well at all and I felt like the worldbuilding was lacking and that there were too many time skips.
This was very confusing both plot and character-wise. It didn't feel like enough was explained with why the main character was doing things. She seemed to have points of realizing she was doing actions for other people/being manipulated and others where she was doing them for herself?
The main character herself is probably what bothered me the most. I think I'm still not certain who she really was or her personality. It was hard to get a read on her. She was constantly fighting internally throughout the book, and didn't start making progress until the very end. This was too late in the book all it caused was frustration with her up until those turning points. The main character's powers aren't explained very well either, I think it needed more. They kept being referenced and used but you never really understand what exactly it is or what the limits are. It felt like this book relied too much on the reader inferring what was happening/how it was happening. While that is a good element to have in books, you definitely need to explain more to people along the way.
The other characters were a mix of boring/uninteresting or I just plain didn't care for them. There's lots of flip flopping with the characters, it feels like the characters are one way and then suddenly are the opposite for no reason.
The slow burn would have been fine if we didn't suddenly turn from loathing to loving in the span of one chapter (or at least it felt that way). Most of the book the main character was being rather horrid to the love interest, and even in her head she thought he was terrible. So the sudden flip of her being into the love interest really took me out of it.
Overall, surprisingly disappointing. I rated it one start because of my frustrations while reading. I think the main characters in this didn't fit well and I didn't get attached to them. It's quite possible other books in the series would be different, though, because I know I've liked this author's writing in the past. I would probably read more of Emma Hamm's work but I don't see myself reading this one again.

jesus it took me WAY too long to get thru this book. i honestly am not sure how to feel about it; it wasn't bad by any means, i enjoyed it and wanted to know how it ended, but god it was slow
i also just found the writing to be a little weird at times? i feel like things would just be repeated over and over and it was confusing to follow sometimes.
i also could not STAND selene most of the time, it felt like every thought she had was contradictory (and not in an interesting way, it was like ???) and she just did hella dumb shit fr
but i like the overall plot and idea of the book, and i will probably continue the series at some point, but i fear starting the 2nd book rn could put me in a reading slump
