I listened to this book and it was beautiful. Harrowing at times, intense, vivid and so beautiful. There should trigger warnings, but read it anyway... read it because. This is the sort of book that will make you feel heard and understood and make you stand taller at the end.

I loved every minute of this book and am so very excited that she has such a deep back catalogue of fiction for me to read next.

A memoir mixed in prose and poetry, and even a little haiku. I enjoyed the format and the various messages throughout. Some pieces were very very good but overall an average poetry anthology or memoir. I do appreciate Anderson’s efforts to encourage outspoken discussion about sexual assaults of all types and genres.

So much power in this beautiful memoir in verse.
Read it— especially if you are or if you love someone who has been affected by sexual assault.

(4.5 stars, so close to a 5; some of the poems just didn't hit as much as i felt like they should!)

i read speak in early high school, before i could relate to it, so it was surreal reading this after, feeling like a completely different person now. i've been putting off reading this, but i had to read it at work today, so today ended up being the day! loved reading laurie's own story, not just about rape but also about her childhood and upbringing. also found the second and third halves about her writing speak and connecting with other survivors to be the most impactful parts of the books for me personally. i found it really, really inspiring! what an incredible woman, and i need to read more of her books.

we celebrated writing for the kids
the world doesn't want to see

Those words come a bit more than halfway through SHOUT, and for me, they defined the reading experience. I could not get them out of my head. It made me think of how often Speak (and now the graphic novel version as well) gets checked out of my classroom library, quietly, and hidden inside a binder, and how often I've had to replace it because it never finds its way back to my shelf, testament to how needed it is. I'm so grateful for Laurie Halse Anderson and the wave she helped unleash in young adult writing. So many kids feel seen, and that's so very, very important. I am awed by the bravery it must have taken to be so raw and so honest in this book, and thankful for her courage to do so. This is a haunting and beautiful book.

The autobiography of Laurie Halse Anderson told through her quintessential verse.

For Anderson fans, this is a truly insightful look into her childhood and young adulthood and experiences that she lived through...but I have never really enjoyed her style of writing and therefore was not as meaningful to me.

Beautifully written. Laurie Halse Anderson never fails to entangle me in her words and truths.
