A moving story of love and loss, set in the post-slavery South. The reader follows Janey as she lives a full life and learns about herself and to follow her own heart. Suitable for high school age and above.

Written incredibly well, Hurston is brilliant at painting a picture with words. I particularly enjoyed the visualization of the vultures. The way she writes paints detailed pictures, especially with connotation to guide the reader's feelings.
