Through indiscriminate suffering men know fear and fear is the most divine emotion. It is the stones for altars and the beginning of wisdom. Half gods are worshipped in wine and flowers. A devastating tale of a woman finding and reclaiming herself, throughout her adult life. The writing is impeccable. The audio performance by Ruby Dee is unmatched.

I absolutely forgot Tea Cake had to die because this man ended up with rabies and he attacked Janie towards the end. And the trial, and aftermath, drawing stark parallels with our current interactions with the criminal justice system

This book is beautifully written. My first thought was, 'this prose is kinda purple.' But actually it is gorgeous and not over the top.

This type of story doesn't appeal to me straight up, but the writing and the characters pulled me in. I didn't cry, but it was a near thing.
