I was in it for the ride after loving Pandora's Jar, but I was taken out of it quite abruptly with Hera's chapter. The "it is by no means excused by" to "it is kind of understandable" of her treatment of Zeus's victims left a poor taste in my mouth. Additionally, some narrative felt like a narrative without a goal or point to be actually conveyed. Nonetheless, the information was brought in a largely comprehensive and interesting manner and served as a nice glimpse into the characters also beyond the myths themselves. Moreover, I do have to applaud the author for the descriptions of sculptures and visual arts, as they were extremely easy to imagine, and added a lot to the enjoyment and understanding of the book.

I was a Greek mythology kid, but haven’t revisited the myths much since so this was a wonderful way to reread the stories with such nuance and humor that added so much humanity into the gods! I love when history is clearly loved so much by the author, you can’t help but be interested.

After reading Pandora's Jar, I immediately had to consume the rest of Haynes' writing. The best next port of call was her retelling of the women goddesses of Greek myth. And this was another great book, same humourous tone peppered throughout what could have been a rather repetitive book. So much information is crammed in, without feeling too disconnected, and with the right amount of background given. I am glad I've read this straight after Pandora's Jar, though, because in some places the names of authors, historical or literary context is not given in the same detail as her previous book, which I understand. There really isn't much duplication of information, which was a risk, given the overlapping nature of the godesses' stories with the mortal women. In some ways, Pandora's Jar set the bar too high that this book couldn't reach it again. Sometimes that's just how it is; whichever book you choose to read first by an author will stick in your mind more, as it is the one that gives you a first impression.
