I think this is one of the best books I've read in years. It's amazing to me. The story follows Miranda Mercury and her teen sidekick Jack Warning. Yes, Jack Warning. The name is awesome. The conceit of the story is that while Miranda and Jack go along doing impossible things Miranda is slowly dying. This creates a great amount of tension between the two main character. The great thing about it is that it never gets down. It has the appropriate amount of seriousness and emotion for the situations they're in, but it never goes fully into melodrama. It never wallows in the negativity. It stays positive.

I did enjoy this graphic novel - but I feel it was very disjointed and hard for me to figure out who was talking to whom, how the action and storyline were going, and it was very disorienting.

However, the art is superb, the characters interesting, and I love the lack of romantic anything and that Miranda is fierce, beautiful, and black. Did I mention brilliant? Awesome.

Miranda Mercury was my first comic book and I loved it! I loved seeing an interracial couple and having such a strong, well written woman at the center of the story. Also, I was really struck by how beautiful the illustrations were - to be honest, I’d written off comic books previously but after seeing how well the words and visuals work together to tell the story, I’m convinced!
