Finally getting around to Joanna Schupe, and I hate to say it folks, but I don't think we're a match. While I liked these being set in New York and her focus on poor immigrant families during that time, I didn't find the core relationship to be all that compelling or worth rooting for. I think the hero does redeem himself at the end, but much of the development of their relationship felt forced.

Fun, witty book. The characters were vivid and lovable. Though I didn’t love the legal subplot, I did love their chemistry. I also loved how independent and fierce the female main character was.

THIS is actually the best Joanna Shupe I've ever read I take what I said before. I felt like Frank and Mamie had some genuine character growth on the page that was extremely satisfying to see.

Obviously Frank is kind of a perfect hero for me: he wants Mamie so bad but having her will ruin his life. I also really enjoyed Mamie's focus and motivation, her willingness to keep her eyes open to the reality of the world and do something about it when she can.

I felt like this book had a really good balance of internal and external conflict that kept the plot from sagging even after they started hooking up. Also, as usual with Shupe, the sex is pretty sexy!

I think the reason a Shupe will never get 5⭐️ from me is that she's always wrapping up the main conflict in like 5 pages or less, and I often find myself mentally rearranging her sentences and changing up her word choice so the story flows better.

I thoroughly enjoyed about the first 75% of this book. Like many romance books, my main issue with the plot comes at the end (more on that in a bit).

I think Shupe must like her rogues, because our lawyer hero is certainly one although our heiress heroines is far from a virtuous wallflower. As her father's lawyer, our hero starts following our heroine around when he realizes she's stealing from the rich to give to the poor.
She then enlists him to help save a poor woman convicted of murder and seduces him along the way. The problem is that she's betrothed and her father will not budge. Lawyer hero also stands a lot to lose as he's hidden his impoverished past to rise in the world.

Now for my issue with the plot at the end. Hero and heroine are constantly fighting and making up. There's a physical fight when hero learns that the betrothed man assaulted his love and then everything is exposed from the affair to the heroine's charity work and the hero's humble origins. There's just a lot of melodrama then with the trial, him reuniting with his family, and he doesn't reunite with the heroine till the very end when he has his big flashy move of opening a charity firm. Did I want to see action and not just throwing money in the right direction? Yes. He didn't fully earn her return of affection to me.
