definitely will return to this! it’s been such a pleasure to read this in the original Tamil (and a pain because I, sadly, cannot speed read in this language). But I actually found the voice and style very accessible and enjoyable and I just need to be in a space where I have more time and patience to savor the story as I ought to, in its rightful language.

Poonachi: Or the Story of a Black Goat is a seemingly simple tale, but as you sift through the layers, so deep and profound. The anthropomorphism of the goat is unerring.
The book takes us through the life of Poonachi, from Poonachi as a little kid, entirely reliant on the old woman - to her adolescent years as she begins to form her own opinions, notices transformations - to plummeting into a moribund famine. The story also draws out the life and struggles of the old couple, the tribulations their daughter faces in her husband's house, the hardships of a dystopian government. In addition to the beautiful, painful story of Poonachi itself, it is also a window into the everyday life of a small goatherd family in an oppressed village, trying their best to carve out a life with their limited means and abundant love.
Poonachi is an incredibly heartwarming and sorrowful tale.

I wished I would have liked the story more, I really do. I think it is a good story about a goat only the problem is it isn't in my opinion written for the western world. This story would do well in India, but it lacks and also the structure is hard to read for when you are Western (it might be the translation??). There for it only gets 3 points.
This is a ARC from the publisher, which I got for a honest review.
