This was unlike most audiobooks I've listened to, in that mixing the graphic novel writing style created a very different listening experience. I recall listening to another book in this style earlier this year, but that was a memoir so it felt easier to process what was going on.
I loved the characters and their found family in this book and I feel this is very appropriate for Pride month. It reminded me of the TV series Pose and it was the best part for me.
The audiobook was produced well and I liked all of the narrators, but I've never been a fan of many narrators and sound effects. I know a lot of listeners like these, so it's probably just personal preference. For me, it detracted from my ability to follow the plot, as it jumped from one character to another to another etc.
Also, I noticed another review mentioned a SA scene, but in my copy I don't remember this. I went back to double check, but could only find an instance when a character is having a flashback and suggests SA happened to someone they knew. I was asked if I wanted to download the new file, so perhaps it's been taken out? I'm not sure. There was an almost violent attack but nothing that suggested SA to me. That said, there's still a lot of heavy subject matters, such as homophobia, transphobia and rejection from family.
Overall, I felt that I could connect to the story and characters, but the format didn't work for me. I would recommend reading the graphic novel and I plan to do this myself in the future.
Thank you to Libro FM and the publishers for the ALC.

This was very good. A story about identity, but also largely about friendship. Like AJ, I am gay and half Filipino and I thought that the story did get a lot of those confusing mixed kid complex feelings very right. I loved Mike Curato’s note at the end though that not everyone will think this hit the nail on the head and that is perfectly okay— Asians/queer Asians are not a monolith. Really enjoyed this book.

It was an adorable "read". I listened to the audiobook and I was enjoying the full cast as well as the music and sounds; they made it feel very immersive. I had no idea this was a graphic novel until halfway through the audiobook when I decided to actually search for the book. I love going into books blindly.

Wish I had read the graphic novel instead of the audiobook! I feel like I missed some of the visual cues that would’ve helped me follow the story/pacing better.
