Thriller set in Mexican jungle. Good storyline & setting & characters - except I was quite disturbed by the islamophobic treatment of the villain / I gues that has become “the other” in literature & will now perhaps ano 2022 go back to being “the Russian “
I can't blame my two star review solely on Hurwitz since I listened to the audiobook and I am always working on something else while listening so there is a potential for incomplete submersion. That said, if the book is good enough, nothing can distract me from enjoying the story and I have to tear myself away from the audiobook if something that requires my complete attention comes up.
The set-up was good and there were many of the elements of a good thriller, but I just never felt that pulse pounding experience from this story that is necessary for enjoying a book like this. If that is missing, then all you are left with is a bunch of running around and characters you don't really care about.

A special thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Gregg Hurwitz’s DON’T LOOK BACK is an action packed thriller on a journey with Eve, through the jungles and mountains in southern Mexico.
Eve was to go on an anniversary trip with husband, until Rick found a younger woman, so Eve decides the getaway trip to this lodge was just what she needs. However, at the lodge, she stumbles upon a lost digital camera while on a jungle trek and learns later it belongs to Theresa, a woman which is missing.
In addition, Eve sees a mysterious man near a hut in the jungle and starts the scare of her life. A terrorist, possibly, or does this man have anything to do with the missing woman? When she finds more photos in the camera of this same man among other things, she begins to wonder what gives. The tour group is trapped in the jungle with a predator, with one obstacle after another as this group fights for survival, and Eve is driven to return alive to her son.
What should have been the trip of a lifetime and excitement, turns into a deadly fight for survival, and one that will change her life forever.
The novel kept me on the edge the entire book, as adrenaline runs high, recalling all the nights I was stuck out alone on a hiking trail or an eight hour biking trek caught in the woods in the middle of rain and thunderstorms. The same trail which later several women were raped and killed.
Wow, would I love to be caught out in the jungle with the hot and good looking author! A gripping novel of survival and death full of suspense, grabbing you from beginning to end!

If I still did half stars this would probably sit at 2.5...
I think I'll stick to reading Orphan X now. It's clear a lot of research went into this novel and the descriptions were well written, but as for the actual plot I didn't get interested in it until the 25% mark, after that it got significantly better though. We seem to have some Gregg Hurwitz trademarks here such as the feature of a Rhodesian Ridgeback and a single mom with a kid :) This novel had a very specific vibe and if you're into cut off with contact from the outside world/survivor-esque vibes this would probably be quite an enjoyable read for you.

This is probably the best thriller I’ve read. It’s action-packed and fast-paced despite the constant themes of cat and mouse. It’s a unique story and written beautifully. The characters are well-developed and very distinct and the setting is well-researched. Some parts also made me sooooo anxious like my heart was racing. Would also make for very good TV lmao. Rate it.
Fun and suspenseful. Like most books of this ilk, there were some really fantabulous leaps, but this kept me engaged and I read most of it in one day.
First book by Gregg Hurwitz that I am disappointed with. Just could not get into it, was dragging so much. I finally decided it wasn't worth trying to get thru it.
Eve Hardaway is in on vacation on Oaxaca Mexico when, improbably, a rogue al-Queda terrorist, Bashir the Bear, decides that the remote tourist camp is a threat. Don't Look Back by Gregg Hurwitz follows the duel between this seasoned mountain warrior and a Prius-driving, single mother. Though, as a reader the resolution was never in question, the story moved quickly from crisis to crisis.
Overall, predictable and enjoyable.

I received this book from NetGalley in return for an honest review.
Gregg Hurwitz never disappoints, but this book was extraordinary. Eve and her husband had planned an anniversary wilderness trip to Mexico, but her husband leaves her for another woman before the anniversary comes around. She has been thinking of cancelling the trip, but decides to go on it anyway, leaving her son with a longtime babysitter. She worries about him, of course, but decides that she needs to do this for herself.
On a hike with the other members of her group -- an older couple, two men, one of whom is gay, a handicapped woman, the two owners of the resort -- she goes off by herself to use the toilet, and catches a glimpse of a scary-looking man in the jungle. She ducks down to hide from him, and finds a digital camera half-buried in the dirt. After looking at the pictures in the camera, she discovers that the camera's owner had also seen the man, and subsequent investigation shows that the woman had disappeared under suspicious circumstances.
A vicious storm makes the internet and phones useless, and washes out roads, leaving the little band all by themselves with a killer who will do anything, and kill anyone, to avoid being discovered.
Eve calls upon strengths that she didn't know she had to survive, and to get home to her son. I thought this book was really exceptional. I couldn't wait to see what would happen. Very well done.
