A história não tem nada a ver com a versão conto de fadas a que a Disney nos habituou. Há muitas cenas violentas, como aliás era costume na época. As personagens correspondem ao arquétipo usual do século XV, cada uma encaixando num tipo de clichê específico que serve um determinado propósito no enredo. Contrariamente ao que seria de esperar, a que mais me agradou foi o vilão, Frollo, pela sua complexidade.
Além da história, o livro tem vários capítulos que se limitam a descrever de forma exaustiva a cidade de Paris, a catedral e os costumes da sociedade da época. Algumas partes eram interessantes, mas às vezes chegava a um ponto em que se tornava cansativo. Não é uma leitura fácil, mas estou feliz por ter chegado até o fim

So this story is not actually centralized on the hunchback of Notre-Dame, but that matters not. There is no real happiness to be found in this story and almost no arguably decent characters. Not that the characters are badly written, but their morals are lacking. The writing is really good and sarcastic, if overly detailed.

i’m so sorry victor hugo, the more that you described 15th century paris, the more i was confused ☹️
this book did take me over a year to read, as i was in a slump, but it’s definitely much longer than it needs to be and is just a tad bit too verbose, even for a classic. would be perfect, in my opinion, if all the descriptions and histories of paris were cut out and we focused solely on the cathedral and the small main cast of characters. that may be by design, however, as all of the characters feel secondary to the “character” of the city of paris, due to how spread out they are in the plot. (or, once again, i just read this extremely slowly so everything felt spread out to me).
