I had high hopes for this book but so many things I found aggravating, and in the end, I think it just definitely was not a book for me. I just can't get on board with someone giving up themselves for a man. This was obviously the authors personal story and I'd say I guess she was fine with it, so why should I care, but she actually wasn't fine with it, and spent the majority of the book complaining about agreeing to the choices she made.
I'm proud of our military and appreciate their sacrifices so we can lead the lives we do in America, but I wish we got more of Andrew's struggles and acclimation between deployment and home life but that was lacking. It truly was just about the sacrifices wives made for their husband's, making it a very anti-feminist novel.
I feel Simone's political judgments throughout the memoir were also unnecessary and took away from the story. The last 20 pages or so were terrible in that regard and seemed simply there to push an agenda, in my opinion. It's too bad politics prohibited who she allowed herself to be friends with. I just can't relate to the story in any way, so it was a thumbs down for me.

This was a great book about the experience of being a spouse of someone in the armed forces.  I listened to this book on audio and it is narrated by the author, which I always like when the book is a memoir.

I listened to the audiobook of this, mostly on my evening walks. For the most part I enjoyed it, but some parts of it dragged a little, however that could have just been a facet of the audio book.  It was read by the author and thus was not an audiobook with lots of well practiced techniques that some audiobooks have due to having professional readers. I found it to be illustrative of her experience in going from someone who came from a family that had no military background to become an Army wife. I’ve noticed that reviews on this book run the gamut and some are very strongly worded due to disagreeing with Simone’s opinion about some topics, which i think is a unique approach to reviewing memoirs. I know for myself when I read and review memoirs I try to not judge the person for their opinions or choices per se but how well they told the story they set out to tell, whether I learned from it, and if i enjoyed that learning process. But maybe this approach is due to my having read lots of memoirs that span a wide range of topics. 🤷‍♀️

Insightful, poignant glimpse into those that support military personnel the most, their spouses, and just how silent they must be, powerless they feel. I also appreciated that her story wasn’t the average military story/experience.

Memoir that reads like a Lifetime movie.

This book feels like having coffee with a close friend. Simone paints a clear picture of all of the Army wives she befriended and the husband she loves but feels like she doesn't know anymore. There is also plenty of interesting insight into military life and how their units are trained, deployed, and organized. I enjoyed following her personal growth as a writer, wife, and mother.
