There are many stories written about wars and military men and their experiences but this is not one of them. Simone Gorrindo had a career in New York City that did not prepare her for being married to Andrew whose dream is to be part of a Special Ops unit of the military. Simone shares her personal experiences of coping with the lifestyle changes, isolation from the outside world and friendships formed with other women in a community that their only common thread is being the spouse of a military service member. Lengthy deployments, little to no information and the challenges associated with being alone for long stretches of time, place multiple pressures on a marriage. These women are stronger than they ever imagined keeping it all together as they grow their families and fear the worst possible fate for the men they love. This ARC was provided by the Gallery/Scout Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Oof. This was a hard one to rate. It took me over 2 months to finish because it felt like it moved so slowly. Maybe the pace of the book was supposed to mimic the meandering days of the life it depicted, but at times it felt like the story was directionless. The writing was intelligent, it wasn’t under or overdone. It just felt like there was no particular drive to the plot. Still, it was interesting to read about the inner lives of military wives, and to recall the many I babysat or cleaned for in my youth, and what they must have been going through. 3.5 stars.

Provided great insight into a life that seems so completely foreign to me and all the conflicting emotions being a military wife must conjure.

I'm really glad I read this book. It's an interesting reflection. There's a lot to think about in terms of friendships and intimacy and relationships generally. Not to mention the job of being a warrior. Definitely worth reading

4.5- I liked this better than I expected it to. I think that the lowish star rating has a lot to do with the fact that Gorrindo deliberately inhabits a very black and white world as a shade of grey. There were times this made me upset or incredulous, but overall, I really admired the way she navigated a world that was full of people who think differently from her. I do want to sit down and ask her a billion more questions, but this was very easy to read and vulnerable.
