Janelle Monáe abolitionist? hell yeah dude. I thought this was a fantastic collection of short stories. All set in the same universe, which was a fascinating setting, they each were exactly what I look for in a SS, packing a punch and leaving me thinking, occasionally with my jaw on the ground. Props to Monáe and co-authors.

4/150 for Mama in 2024

Had some trouble staying focused on this one, as many of the “short stories” are really novellas and I found myself feeling distracted by the overlong lengths too often, but I can’t stop thinking about some of those endings. I love a short story with a strong ending that leaves the reader both wanting to know more about what happened to the characters after the ending and also fully satisfied that the story ended exactly where it should have. Anyone who can do that well deserves high praise, and the author and their collaborators nailed the ending of every story.

Intersection afro Futureism and Sci-Fi I didn’t know I needed. I liked all the stories took place in the same universe. The first story was certainly the strongest. Made me like the album even more.

All of the stories were so interesting and well written, and really thought provoking. I don’t typically read short stories b/c they often leave me wanting more, and that certainly happened here, but it was worth it.

As with all story collections, there's going to be some unevenness. The last story felt like the weakest, but I appreciated the hopeful ending. Overall I absolutely loved it.
