i listened to neil gaiman's audio narration of this book and i have to say that every time he was voicing richard and said "anGEL" it fully took me out of the story..... WHY IS HE SAYING IT LIKE THAT?

In his forward, Neil Gaiman's says he set out to "write a book that would do what the books I had loved when I younger, books like Alice in Wonderland, or the Narnia books, or The Wizard of Oz, did for me as a kid". With Neverwhere, Gaiman creates a fantastical world that parallels our own, only accessible to those that slip through the cracks or have the compassion to follow them. Gaiman's whimsical and quippy narrative voice is anchored by a believably fleshed out world and distinct cultures.
