I bloody loved this look at black gay Britain, centred around Brixton, during the 70's, 80's and 90's. The author does a truly brilliant job of bringing these men's stories alive. Showing their lives in all their complex, messy, fabulous, sexy, funny and sometimes sad and scary ways so much so that by the end of it I felt I knew each of them personally.
So much of this book made me laugh. I adored how bitchy and gossipy the men were at times but also how thoughtful and honest they were about their lives, their experiences and the communities they fostered and lived in.
I listened to the audio which is read fabulously by the author. At times I forgot I was listening to him and felt like I was listening to each of the men who were sharing their stories which I think is testament to his writing as well as his reading.
I loved how he weaved all the stories together and laced it with aspects of social history around racism, HIV, homophobia and of course London and Brixton. It gave context to their stories and therefore made them all the more powerful.
If you are interested in social history, Queerness, Black Britain, London or just want to hear some wonderful human stories then this is the book for you

Reading this felt like a fireside chat or going for a coffee with friends. It’s so illuminating and engaging, showing that the people we speak to can offer us more historical insight than any textbook can, plus it can offer us something that may have failed to have been archived or remembered.
