I thought this was an engaging piece of history. I really enjoyed the vulnerability in the interviews and the depth of the supporting historical context. There were parts that felt a bit fuddled and I think this book would have benefited significantly from adding some of the images discussed, but overall a good read.

Such an honest and caring and loving insight and just a really great account of the lives of various men who care, basically; men who - in their own way - want to be a part of the conversation and in the conversation, and to have their community be seen and heard and included/acknowledged. Which is a very general way of saying it btw - maybe just do yourself a favour and read it 😜🫶
So yeah, I highly recommend this one. I listened to it on audio with the author narrating it (Libby, 1.25 speed), and I’ve only ever had incredibly special experiences with doing this as the author just does their work justice, you know.

This history of Black and gay London is clearly so very core to the texture and vibrancy of the city we love. Very glad we have this book to recognise and celebrate that!
Imo social history should be read for the sake of reading history, and to go looking for inspiration is a little passé …. that being said, I can’t help feeling very moved and exhilarated by the rich lives of activism, sex and self-knowing these men lived. Especially the sex - kinky, casual, frequent, anonymous, passionate, rebellious, political, liberatory. Reading this was relief from the heavy anti-sex culture of literary communities and wider political scenes of today.
Really hope Okundaye writes another book - I will eagerly follow his journalism until then!!
