I really enjoyed this book! This would be my favorite out of the first three in the series.
I enjoyed the multiple characters and story lines. It kept the book moving unlike the first two books. They were very slow. I wish the author took more time on Ursula’s backstories though, they felt rushed. I was shocked at the beginning. This book started very dark, which was exciting. I felt the other two books lacked in this area. Ursula has been the most entertaining villain so far! Fueled by hate.
I adore Tulip and I’m glad her story continued in this book. She eventually found Prince Popinjay and they seem to be hitting it off. I hope she finds love after the whole ordeal with the Beast. Plus this book closed many questions I had to the first two books. For example, there was no epilogue for the beast. We found out he apologized to Tulip and even helped save her father’s kingdom from ruin. Also, Snow White still had the magic mirror and the Evil Queen was nice again and protecting her.
I loved that Ursula is Triton’s sister. I’m assuming Poseidon and Amphitrite are their parents. When Poseidon died, the pair were given equal share of the sea plus two magical items. Triton received the trident while Ursula received the magic golden Nautilus shell.
Triton marries Athena (Ariel’s mother) who later is captured or died at the hands of Captain Hook.
It was interesting that the author used her own cat as inspiration for the odd sister’s cat, Pflanze. Pflanze could communicate through thought. After arriving to the Morningstar Castle, Nanny’s powers were awakened more than the last book (not sure why, maybe the odd sisters wiped her memories and sealed her powers?) He communicated with Nanny and helped her try to find Circe for the odd sisters. I was surprised how upset the odd sisters were without their beloved little sister, Circe. They were crying and pulling out their hair and tearing their dresses. What madness!!
I called it that Triton must have sent his sister, Ursula away when they were young because in the book they said he couldn’t assume the throne unless she was pronounced dead or unworthy. Therefore, he had to prove she was one or the other so he went to get her after she destroyed the town, Ipswich to prove she was a madwoman. Even though, Triton kills fisherman and sinks their ships. Ursula destroyed Ipswich to seek revenge on the people of the town who tore her adoptive father to shreds after he tried to defend Ursula after her first transformation to a sea witch.
Triton only found her to bring her home to show she was a madwoman that wasn’t up to his standards of beauty. Even though, his wife, Athena was super compassionate and fought for Ursula’s cause. (Go Athena!!) Triton ends up taking the throne and casts Ursula out of the kingdom. He takes her golden shell so she can’t access her magic.
However, the three odd sisters gave Ursula a bag in the last book and we find out they traded Tulip’s beauty and voice back for her golden shell of power. This is when Ursula devises her plan. The odd sisters are looking for Circe and they believe she is mad at them for meddling with the Beast. So they turn to Ursula (who actually has Circe in her seas garden) for help and she tells them they must help her kill Triton and take back her kingdom first.
Maleficent sends warnings to the odd sisters telling them not to trust Ursula. It’s kind of interesting to see all the witches tied together. A love hate complex. The odd sisters mentioned a Romanian witch that traveled by chicken feet several times in the book. I’m not sure who that would be.

It was a good book. However, it didn’t really feel like Ursula’s story. Yes, her story was told but the book wasn’t really hers. This book was more focused on the odd sisters and with Princess Tulip and Nanny (both from The Beast Within). Still a good book, good progress on the overall story regarding the odd sisters. We now know why Ursula was the way she was and now I hate Triton. 3 1/2 stars.
It was so fun to read this alternative version of one of my favorite Disney movies.
Looking forward to read them all!
