Misschien startte ik dit boek niet helemaal met de juiste verwachtingen. Ik had de flaptekst wel gelezen, maar de testimonials niet. Hierdoor verwachtte ik een boek met een heel onschuldige treinreiziger die getuige is van iets vreselijks, maar er zit veel meer achter dan dat.
Hierdoor vind ik het nu moeilijk om een recensie te schrijven merk ik. Aan de ene kant zie ik een hoop vakmanschap. Deze thriller zit heel goed in elkaar en de onbetrouwbare verteller is uitstekend gedaan (Stephen King is het met me eens in de testimonials ;)). Tegelijkertijd maakte dat juist ook dat ik niet echt een band voelde met het boek en de personages. Bij vlagen heb ik me aan allemaal geërgerd.
Daardoor vond ik het allemaal niet zo spannend; ik werd niet echt in het verhaal gezogen en kon het verhaal steeds vrij makkelijk aan de kant leggen. Jammer want met zoveel enthousiaste reacties en een thrillerprijs op zijn naam had ik veel van het boek verwacht. Misschien te veel?
De continue verschuiving van verdenkingen, ontbrekende stukjes geheugen en wisselende perspectieven maken het wel een lekker onvoorspelbaar boek. Pas toen de auteur wilde dat je als lezer puzzelstukjes in elkaar ging leggen, gebeurde dat me ook.
Ook kon ik me steeds meer inleven in Rachel, het meisje in de trein. Daardoor ontstond er in het laatste kwart toch nog iets meer een band. Dat laatste deel heb ik dan ook in één ruk uitgelezen!

This book had me hooked from page 1. I loved the way the book, while focusing on Rachel, also told the stories of Anna and Megan from their perspective and switched back and forth to keep the tension brewing. While I eventually had my suspicions, I didn't catch on to the twist until pretty far along so the mystery was kept alive for me throughout most of the book. It's not a difficult read but following along with Rachel's journey was emotional and painful and kept you rooting for her the whole way through.

I really enjoyed this book. Honestly couldn’t figure out who did it for quite a while. Good stuff.
Amazing and very intense. From time to time little disturbing, but still worth reading.

Dorwałem gdzieś darmowego audiobooka, więc w końcu przyszła pora, by umilić sobie tą powieścią wystawanie w korkach w drodze do i z pracy.
Nie spodziewałem się po "Dziewczynie" zbyt wiele – dotarły do mnie już wcześniej opinie, które ukształtowały moje oczekiwania. W tym kontekście powieść raczej pozytywnie mnie rozczarowała, słuchało się całkiem dobrze. Historia może niespecjalnie oryginalna, ale za to ciekawie prezentująca stan umysłu alkoholiczki i różne codzienne aspekty jej nałogu.
To tyle jednak. Poczucia straconego czasu nie mam (w końcu czy da się bardziej stracić czas w korkach?), lecz również niewiele ponadto.

What a shocker. 2 stars is generous. For a start how can the woman of the title be a 'girl'. All the female protagonists are mature women. Surely we can allow females to become women at some time in their lives?
Secondly the story is lame, it is strung out and annoying. While there are some fleeting insights into the destructive side of alcohol and difficulties people face in abusive situations, the story just did not gell.
Third... Well I did guess the identity of the murderer about half way through, but probably was not really sure till a little later in the story. There are just too many implausible decisions made and the characters too conveniently silly or just totally narcissistic in their view of the world.
Only read if you are sure that you like the books that some of the reviewers who have given it a rave review read...
