I found this short story on Goodreads and since it is from Alix E. Harrow, I absolutely had to read it.
What a beautiful, heart-warming story about death and love! You know you read a good short story when you wish it became an actual "long-form" book. Can't wait to read more from Alix Harrow :)

That’s what makes this job tough, of course. It’s not the dead rejoining the limitless love of the universe; it’s the ones they leave behind, who have to keep on trudging through the world beneath the burden of their terrible, limited love.
A beautiful short story about a reaper's 222nd soul. Scratched my itch in the search of a literary experience similar to Spiritfarer. Emotional, soft, a dry (at times humorous) voice, Caitlin tears at the end. It's perfect.

Well, Alix Harrow seems to be joining the list of authors that regularly make me cry and feel grateful for it at the same time; I should really keep a lid on that sort of thing. I love this story.
And goddamn, Harrow crafts sentences that strike me as just perfect:
"They look for people whose hearts are vast and scarred, like old battlefields overgrown with poppies and saplings. People who know how to weep and keep working, who have lost everything except their compassion.
