This tale starts off pretty 0 to 100 laying the groundwork for the truly outlandish characters and feats within the plot. After a wild and somewhat confusing start it really gets good once monkey starts accumulating power. Monkeys meteoric rise to power and subsequent bullying of gods is truly funny and then the story just gets more comical once they bring in the buddhist and pigsy. This book doesnt take itself seriously and neither should you just enjoys the laughs the ridiculousness and the journey to the west.

I fw stone monkeys heavy 5/5, in fact, sun wukong and i are no too dissimilar; i too jumped through a waterfall, landed on an iron bridge and became king of the monkeys - what a crazy coincidence.

not exactly how i remembered my childhood story to be like, but it was entertaining.

it’s so interesting to read the source material of where a lot of the modern media we all know and love take their inspiration from. i know that one piece has dragon ball as one of the many inspirations and how that takes a lot from journey to the west. i can’t speak for dragon ball but for one piece i can definitely see a lot of similarities, such as: the devil fruits granting superhuman abilities like the divine peaches, sengoku trying to trap luffy under his hand, shapeshifting staff and cloud (nami), both mcs uprise against the elites and want freedom.

overall though, i found this book to be incredibly hilarious with all the characters being likeable and entertaining! it’s definitely one i’d happily re-read as it never failed to put a smile on my face.
