We loved watching the Japanese TV series, Monkey Magic back in the early 80's. And when I ran across Monkey again in Gene Luen Yang's 'American Born Chinese', I just knew I needed to read the original stories to better understand the folklore and the references.
This is a traditional quest story so don't expect an overarching storyline beyond the journey there and back with plenty of monster and demon slaying, close calls and food!
As I read I could really imagine people sharing these stories when they came together in the evening; looking forward to being thrilled, horrified, made to laugh and with lessons to be learned.
Monkey is a true trickster, and Great Sage, Heaven's Equal.
