A whimsical, lighthearted and lengthy journey through a mystical and fantastical odyssey of 16th Century Asia that always had me turning the page. Some characters were painfully annoying but it was always a pleasure to see what adventures and challenges the band of Buddhist misfits would encounter next!

Like I’m kind of so obsessed with this & lovell’s translation was hilarious and so fun, I definitely recommend it.

The translation of the story I read was by Timothy Richard, a Victorian Christian Missionary. It was not exactly a page turner - it was very much a case of "and then this happened, and then that happened, and then something else happened..."

I would be very interested to read a different translation, but the style in which this one was written left me a bit cold and bored.

Half rating because it's terrible but hilarious. How is this well respected classic literature? Insane. the TWs I added aren't REALLY graphic I was just APPALLED by the mpreg
