I liked it. I mean, it's not my favorite book I've read for school but it was okay. I really enjoyed learning about the culture and the history behind thos, though. Plus, it was cool to real a folk tales from another culture. It was a really unique reading experience for me

Fairly fast paced, there's just a lot of it! I could see this being a fun one to read aloud (maybe with some mild censoring depending on child age) with my boys. I can definitely see how this is a text that has withstood the test of time, its humor blending into subtle satire that can find modern parallels, no matter the century!

I love it but I wish I head read the unabridged version. While Arthur Waley definitely reduced the length of the story as best as he could without leaving out anything substantial, it sure does feel rushed at some points and I wish I could have read more about the adventures along the way.
To anyone who feels the same way but doesn't feel like actually starting all over again, I can only strongly recommend the video series from OSP (Overly Sarcastic Productions) on YouTube.

A nice introduction to the classic tale. But if this text is not required reading or you want to introduce your kids to the adventures of Monkey I would suggest a graphic novel.
