I think the biggest compliment I can give this book is that, despite its length (~1300 pages, the longest in the series), it still felt too short! Every second I spent reading this book I was engaged and excited for what was happening and what was to come next. I think a big reason for that is the book’s pacing — without spoiling anything, the events in the book take place over a rather… short period of time. But a lot can (and does) happen in that time. Because this book serves as the halfway point in the series, it feels like a finale in a lot of ways — and it lives up to the lofty expectations a finale of this scope would demand. This is my favorite entry in the storm light archive so far (as of the first 5 being released).

a very high 3.5!!! this book was unfortunately my least favorite of the stormlight archive, but it’s hard to be better than some of the absolute best books i’ve ever read… even though i did have hope that this one would somehow manage that. my main issue was with the very overt 21st century moral themes that took me out of the plot a bit, because sanderson previously did such a beautiful job weaving sentimentality in with epic battles and character arcs. for some reason, all of it fell a bit flat for me in this one. however, the ending was INCREDIBLE and i cannot wait for the final 5 books in the archive. i will still recommend this book highly for jasnah, adolin, and renarin’s plot lines alone (and kaladin’s by the end.. but it was a drag in the middle there), which says a lot. still a great book, just not everything i was expecting!
with that, i can definitively give my final ranking of the stormlight archive:
1) Words of Radiance
2) Rhythm of War
3) Oathbringer
4) The Way of Kings
5) Wind and Truth
