This book could have been so good, but alas, it was not. Very disappointed, I'm glad everyone warned me it was bad before I read it though, so at least I was prepared.

I really liked this series. I was captivated till the very end. I was slightly disappointed with the last book though. What was Alina's back story and how is she connected to the Darkling? He was the most interesting character of the series and he ends up on the back burner of this book. Also it doesn't make sense for Mal to come back to life, none of the other amplifiers did. It just seemed like a quick fix so she could have a happy ending. I loved how the series does some twists and turns that you don't expect. Loved the characters. Definitely recommend the series!

My feelings about this one stay pretty consistent to the others in the trilogy.

I didn't feel invested fully until about 60% into the book. I then sped through it and all the twists come flying at you. It wasn't all necessarily good though because I felt that some of these moments fell flat after the build up. There were a lot of parts that were repetitive and droned on, which was a key reason I took so long to get through this one.

Overall though, there were some interesting scenes, decent action, and a good feeling of found purpose/family that I did enjoy.

This and the entire trilogy is a solid 3 β˜†'s for me.

β€œIn this moment he was just a boy -brilliant, blessed with too much power, burdened by eternity.”

While this wasn't as good as I had wished for it to be, it still managed to be a somewhat satisfying conclusion to Alina's story. I've read a bunch of YA trilogies with beyond disappointing finales, to the point that it sometimes ruins the earlier books for me. The biggest thing, for me at least, that helped Ruin and Rising not feel like a complete fail, was how it ended. I can't say I was extremely happy with it, but it made the most sense for all the characters.

All of that being said, this book dragged so. MUCH. I started to get extremely bored and had to start skimming parts of it. I'm also not a huge fan of how Nikolai just gets shoved out of most of the story. He's way more interesting than half of the Grisha we get stuck with. Plus more of The Darkling is never a bad thing, especially since he was my favorite part of the first novel. I feel like there was just too much wasted potential in this, hence why I gave it such a mediocre rating.

SpoilerI'm really happy that Alina got to have her happy ending with Mal, but a strong part of me will always mourn what could've been. I really adored Nikolai, with how refreshing and bright his personality was mixed in with all of these morose characters. But the one character that I wish could've had a different story, is Aleksander. He was probably the most tragic character in this whole series, and for whatever reason, those types of people tend to always be my favorites. My heart broke the most when he died.

I will read the Six of Crows duology at some point. I've heard a lot of people tend to like it more than this trilogy, which gives me hope. I'm also really excited to see more of Nikolai in King of Scars.
