I didn't hate this book, but I was disappointed. It was poorly researched (the author admits that the historical facts were gathered through living in the area). The characters were very one dimensional. The majority if characters were portrayed as either good or evil. I was also EXTREMELY disappointed that two of three women in this story were "rescued" by such saintly Western men.
If you like this type of literature, read Memoirs of a Geisha or something by Lisa See.

This book drags on for waayyy toooo looonnng. Repetitive, excessive details. I was so annoyed by the time I was done.
Amazing!!!! I wasn't quite sure what to expect but this book is up there with Amy Tan and Lisa See's writing. This story just flowed, it was hard to put down.
It was a good book, but it's definitely not for those who are considered soft hearted. I know I'll never be able to get this book out again. There's a part about halfway (you'll know it when you get to it) through the book where I just lost it altogether and had to leave it for a few hours. Then I became determined to finish the rest in the same day and I did, but I'll never touch it again.
This book is so poorly researched it comes off as disgustingly racists a result. No wonder it is described as similar to Memoirs of A Geisha.
I loved every page of this book. A story of a mother and daughter fighting for what is most wanted in that era as women, their freedom to do what they want with their body and life. Each step they take is a step carefully chosen, with patience to what they deserve. There are heartaches along the way, and risks they have to take, but they stay strong.
My first DNF for 2022 and second for COVID.
I wanted to like this book because of the supposed period it’s suppose to be set in, but seeing reviews from others about its historical inaccuracies and lack of research made it hard to want to cheer for the author.
Additionally, as someone who is trying to read more POC writers, to find out the author is white but decided to publish under the Sino-canized name felt like bait and switch.
Overall, I felt like the novel had too many villains who were all caricatures and stereotypes to emphasize what a wholesome character Devereaux was
