This has been on my shelf since I was the target demographic, and now that I'm 24 I finally decided to pick it up. Take all this with a grain of I'm not 12 anymore. It was a slow start, but once they finally got around to the journey it was a fun quick read. Torak needs a little more character development, he seems stoic and not much else, whereas Renn has aspirations that may contradict her calling and it strong willed in the faces of the men in her life. I guess 2000s middle grade books really love the Chosen One trope, I've read so many with ~prophecies~ it's almost a given, though not always a downer.

The first book I ever loved.
Wolf Brother is an extremely important book to me for many reasons but it was my first real foray into reading with a conscious mind - its hard to really articulate what I mean by that in a review so I won't.
Michelle Paver sets up and INTIMATELY engages with the structural building of a beautiful and colourful world from an extremely unique perspective. Those who love fantasy - myself in that number - often shy away from anything "primitive" or without societal construction because its leaves certain wonder to be desired. But in a world without big beautiful cities or huge journeys to forbidden dark lands, or an overt issue the world solely faces (just yet), the whole of Wolf Brother still makes everything about the mundane nature of a predominantly forested landscape unimaginably engaging. From the cultural rules and laws, the outlooks of the individual clans and how beautifully all of natural world is described, there is literally nothing that comes to mind with which to criticise for the world itself.
The story is beautiful and the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness as a whole are an excellent read throughout - this book in specific acts much as a starting point given the introduction or Torak, Renn, Wolf, Fin-Kedinn and a few smaller collection more. I would rate this book higher but one of the best parts of the series is Torak's engagement with others and how his difference to that of the cultural touchstone of the clans sets him apart. Because Torak spends a good part of the novel getting acquainted with this new lifestyle there is still more excellence to come.

Amazing book, really worth reading, especially if you’re in to fantasy and adventure. The only flaw is that the big fight scene which everything had been leading up to was short, fast and boring to say the least. The rest of the book is perfect and the characters are amazing but just that one chapter was disappointing.

My earliest favorite book. I grew up with each book release and have revisited the series dozens of times. It doesn't grow old, I always find something new, something I didn't notice the time before. An enthralling, adventurous, series of quests that take the main three characters (Torak, Wolf, and Renn) through challenges, victories, and defeats that shape them and their world. A beautiful touch of magical realism, ancient knowledge, and elaborate world building. Strong characters that must come together create a profound connection through struggle.
