Whew. I got a little worried toward the end and wasn't sure if I could finish. There were so many plot points to keep up with and I felt like every couple of pages was some sort of mind-boggling plot twist, martyrdom, or marathon between characters racing to the finish before their clock stopped. Ultimately I liked it but I'm glad it's over.

This was an epic conclusion to this series and had me crying, on edge and smiling by the end. There were a few plot holes/areas I found lacking or unnecessary, but overall a fantastic book.

I’m pretty satisfied with that ending.
To be honest, less people died than I thought they would! I thought either Lysandra or Aedion were goners for sure, along with either Borte, Nesryn, or Dorian himself. I feel like it was a little too much of a happy ending despite all the loss, because there weren’t really a lot of deaths I could connect to. The rest of the Thirteen dying was sad, and I cried for Asterin, but I didn’t really know any of the others other than Vesta and Sorrel. I feel like a little more loss would have been effective (in making me sob), but I am of course happy that it did not end that way. I would get annoyed with how often the pov’s switched, because I’d get so invested in what was taking place in one storyline that I’d get frustrated at having to leave it behind. But that frustration would soon be forgotten as I was sucked into the new perspective, so I wasn’t too upset. I thought that the storyline progressed well, even if it stressed me out to no end that nobody was aiding Aedion and the Bane and how badly I wanted to slaughter the old Terrasen Lords. Aelin’s time being tortured and her recovery were some of my most-anticipated things to read about in this book, and they were written very well. It was very sad and heartbreaking, especially the parts with Fenrys, but it was powerful. I’m so glad that they had each other both through it and afterwards, and I thought that their unspoken language was so powerful as well. I really enjoyed all the action and adventure in this book, but I was definitely frustrated with certain points. I thought it was BS how Aedion was treating Lysandra, and how she just ended up forgiving him. And I agree that it was important to have those effective final battle scenes with Maeve and Erawan, but I thought it was BS that the gods just didn’t follow through with their bargain and even more BS that Aelin tried to save Elena, who’d had a thousand years already, like wtf? I’m very disappointed that she and Dorian lost most of her powers but oh well. I loved Dorian in this book, especially how he slayed and played Maeve at Morath, even if I thought he was being an idiot in how he was frolicking about in his different forms and in letting Maeve free when he left. My favorite parts of these books have been badass Aelin kicking ass and taking names and looking amazing while doing it, wielding schemes and plans and powers like no other. It was disappointing that we didn’t get a lot of those this book, but it made sense with the whole tortured deal. I still have a few questions about things, such as whatever happened to Dorian’s mom and Hollin? Also, who is that other member of the cadre that was ever so briefly mentioned, and how will he come up again in the future SJM universe?? Oh yeah, and Aelin totally saw Rhys and Feyre when she was falling through worlds, so that was pretty cool. All in all, I think it was almost too happy of an ending, but I’m glad there was no pregnancy trope with Aelin.

There is a special place in my heart that until now I thought was reserved just for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows but alas there is space for one more. Both now reside together in easy reach of my bed

The character development and world building included in this series is absolutely phenomenal and this finale sticks the landing. The prologue alone is incredible. There are three things SJM writes incredibly well: Battle scenes, Women I wanna be and men who actually deserve to be with those women, this book showcases all three in abundance. I cried my eyes out multiple times to this book both in joy and heartache and probs once or twice out of sheer tension.

As much as I tried to avoid it, I had a fair amount of this book spoilt for me thanks to bookstagram and Booktok but my god this book still had me on the edge of my seat the whole time and I think some of those spoilers actually saved me from a number of cardiac arrests. The pace of this book is incredible and the plot twists and tension building fantastic. I love the skill SJM has for tying everything little thing in from across a series, I think I screamed at the end of chapter 16.

*** I’ve tried to keep my following thoughts as a vague overview and spoiler-free but if you want to remain unbiased prior to reading stop now coz I’m about to spread a whole lot of love ***

Aelin is my favourite character ever now - I love how SJM really gave her bravery and courage center stage here (obvs one does not speak Aelin Ashryver Whitethorn Galathynius’s name without mentioning her intelligence, sass and all round badass ways too).

The storyline of the witches is absolutely outstanding - Manon and Abraxos for the win. Everyone should read these books for them alone, I am and always will be sucker for a witch story and Manon’s is a so interesting and different, a favourite for sure. I’m never going to emotionally recover from chapters 90 and 91.

Lysandra and Elide are the friends Aelin’s deserved her whole life, they both deserve the world. All of their POVs were incredible and some of their scenes hold their own against Aelin’s and Manon’s storylines well.

Rowan is the no. 1 book BF. The ending of chapter 28 sent chills down my spine, I freaking loved it. Aelin and Rowan’s relationship is beautiful and they compliment and support each other so well.

Fenrys… I am speechless, give the male a whole book.

It was great to see Dorian get more independence in terms of plot - and boy was he given a worthy story.

Maeve was such an interesting character, I loved the constant blurred lines and grey moments to her character. So many dimensions (pun unintentional but acknowledged).

If I had any wishes to make it would be:

It would have been nice to see the OG gang - Aelin, Dorian and Chaol have more interaction towards the end but you can’t have everything.

I got a bit tired of hearing about the TOD gang, especially towards the end, feel like they were starting to take away from Aelin’s hard fought ending.

Anyways…

I pray SJM wasn’t playing with us hinting TOG having a few stories left to tell.

It’s Aelin’s world, we’re all just living in it now.

What. A. Finale.
And what a series!!! SJM did it again, closing the Throne of Glass series with one for the books (ba-dum-tss 🥁). I did not expect to be sucked into not one, but two SJM series and be held in a chokehold by them. But here we are… I loved this series.

I was utterly immersed into Aelin’s world as our beloved characters race across the world in their last ditch efforts to save Aelin from Maeve, save Terrasen from Erawan, and create a better world once and for all.

Kingdom of Ash was everything I hoped for and more: an emotional rollercoaster of darkness, romance, battle, grief, joy, heartbreak. I laughed, I cried, I literally clapped. And now I’m sad it’s over.

tw: torture, death, grief, murder, battle, gore, sexual content

This is the kind of conclusion you want to and 8-books series.
Almost a thousand pages, and at no point does it seem slow-paced.

This book has a lot of war. It can’t really surprise anyone, but as someone who isn’t the biggest fan of battle-scenes, this book is quite heavy on them. That said, the action is written nice, and you can follow what happening quite well.

The series as a whole deserves the hype it gets! ToG and CoM are a little slow, but from Heir of Fire it takes of, and I’d argue Heir of Fire is only as good as it is because of the ground work and world building laid out in the first 2 books.
I was quite surprised feeling nostalgic for the early books reading Kingdom of Ash. Sooo much has happened to the poor characters!

Over all, a great series, with a final book worthy of all its predecessors!
