It seems that writers are taking up the responsibility of envisioning our future, once capitalism and ensuing climate change have ravaged it. Politicians should also be doing this work, but they are too busy keeping the status quo. de Kretser gave a great insight into Australia's near future - it made me laugh, probably because it didn't seen too far from now. (redecoration of house interiors every year, prediction of life outcomes in Insta stories, a child named Fanta, Australia having a No-Policy on coal/climate & an even worse policy towards refugees and migrants.) But, of course, as I laughed I was crying inside.

I also enjoyed the sibling novel set in 1980's France. (There are two Scary Monster stories in the one novel) It was less obvious in its messaging. I wasn't so good at making a link between the two, and I still haven't decided if both stories work well together! I do know that I enjoyed the writing though.
