Two short novels printed back to back that address issues of migration and what it means to be Australian. There's no indication as to which one to begin with and I began with the story of Lyle in a dystopian near future that extends on all of the worst elements of current Australia. There's some nice satire but I found the story of Lili (a 22-year-old Australian with a migrant background teaching English in France in 1980-81) in the other section much more impressive.

How depressing sigh. I hate it here.
I liked the two stories, although I didn't pay enough attention to learn how they connect.

Whilst Lili's experiences and desires resonated with me quite closely, Lyle's story really got under my skin. Each story is 153 pages long and both left me feeling uncomfortable about my place in Australian culture and capitalist society as a whole. Worth a read.
