Simply brilliant. 14 different illustrators answered the old riddle "Why did the chicken cross the road?" in 14 different ways. There's so much you could do with this in the classroom.

I read this a few years ago and just didn't get it. My son picked this up during the last library visit, and I really enjoyed it. In 2008 gave it 2 starts, 2011 I'd give it 4, 2o I'll split the difference and rate it 3.

I'd say this isn't really a children's book, although my five year old found it hilarious. It's a sampler of picture book artists, and a very good one at that. Seeing them all illustrate the same theme gives you a very good idea of each artist's personality, humor, style and skill. Love the compilation of answers to the title question as posed to current illustrators. This entertaining format should be used more often!

Cute collection of answers to the timeless riddle. Worth reading just for the diversity in the art. And because my 6-year-old thought it was funny.

I loved looking at the illustrations from 14 different artists; each illustrated one reason why the Chicken might have crossed the road. The jokes were funny, but it was even more exciting to see how each illustrator's style (both in jokes and in art) was different.
Each picture offers a lot of opportunity for discussion, for encouraging kids to draw their own answer to that age-old question, or to have kids explore a variety of illustrators all in one book. Kids who like jokes or art should enjoy this.
