The family drama stressed me out and made this less enjoyable for me.

I haven’t even finished it and I’m so mad. TW: VICTIM BLAMING. Lucy’s conversation with her brother, Matt:
“I wasn’t fine! None of it is fine. I feel like I’m losing my mind all the time.” “Okay, but Luce, you never, ever complain or ask for help.”
“Are you kidding? I ask you to do stuff all the time!”
He rolled his eyes. “Sure, stuff like, ‘Hey, Matt, can you do the dishes?’ [spoiler alert: he doesn’t do his dishes] Never once have you said, ‘Hey, Matt, I feel like I’m going out of my fucking mind, and I really, really need some help here before I completely lose my shit.’”

This shit goes on and on. She even *thinks* that it’s her fault because she didn’t tell her grown ass adult brother that there was a *reason* he should pay his share of the rent/utilities/grocery bill or scrub his own damn toilet... besides the fact that he’s a damn adult.

This book lost at least a full star for this shit. It’s like Nix is trying to pile on the realization that Lucy is a doormat, but having her brother be such a dickhead and having Lucy believe his garbage is misogynist at best and pathological at worst. We can’t expect men to do their share when we’re telling women that it’s their fault because they didn’t BEG. Fuck. That. Nonsense. Susannah Nix, you should be ashamed.

Also, the HEA was pretty disappointing,
way to ruin a proposal, Tanner. Then to twist the knife by asking for a long engagement? Should have just said no.
And it ends on a cliffhanger. Boo.

Susannah Nix does it again, with a solidly-written tribute to trusting oneself and choosing love in spite of parents who have not been able (or decided) to fix themselves before having children. Not the most escapist of reads but spicy and, for those of us who have had challenging relationships with our parents, another satisfying read about kindred spirits who find their way. I’m looking forward to reading Ryan’s story next and, two books in, hoping there will eventually be a chance to read George’s side of things.

3.5/5 stars.

This was such a sweet lovers to “enemies” to colleagues to friends back to lovers romance with such depth and tenderness; I’m so glad I picked this up!

Lucy and Tanner King both have a strained relationship with their families. Lucy has been the carer and provider for both her mum and younger brother since their dad left, with their mum now being rather manipulative and unpredictable. Tanner’s father, the CEO of the family company, has always made him feel like nothing he does is good enough. I loved that through this story, both Tanner and Lucy are so supportive of one another through these issues.

There were so many cute moments in here and definitely some steamy scenes. I loved the queer and diverse cast of characters as well as the fact this story challenged gender stereotypes and more sexist views; Tanner is gentle and caring whereas Lucy is the provider for her family. There is also some fab period positivity which we love to see.

There was so much more to this story than I expected but it was also such a great romance. This is part of a series, with each book about a different member of the King family, but you can read them as standalones (this is the second in the series but I haven’t read the first and it didn’t hinder my experience). This book ends with an incident that sets up the next book which I would be interested in picking up!
