informative slow-paced

Dee Brown provides an easily digestible view of what life was like for the characters populating the western half of the United States from the time of Westward Expansion and Manifest Destiny to the early 20th century. Introducing myriad roles from explorers, Native tribes, Gold Rushers, cowboys, and more, Brown drops you right into the middle of the action.

The historical tracking of this period is filled with insights on daily life, disputes (both armed and merely politically charged), and stories of well-known characters of this region - both real and fiction.

Despite a clunky composition (due to the fact that this prose is an amalgamation of three other projects Brown completed), the pages do tend to slip away as the different stories sweep you away. A great opener to anyone interested in learning more about this time period and way of life.
