The Hurricane Wars is the definition of a slow burn—seriously, it’s reallll slow. But with enemies to lovers, arranged marriage, and space fantasy, it delivers all the best tropes.

Full transparency, I’ve read the original story and absolutely loved it. Yes, I’m a Reylo fan, so my review might be a bit biased. Because I knew the original, I felt like I could better envision and understand the world Thea was building.

My one complaint is the large time jumps in the timeline. They really threw off the flow and likely impacted how the characters and plot could have developed. But despite that, I still love the story and cannot rave enough about it! I’m really looking forward to the second installment, A Monsoon Rising.

I wish they would’ve just used fade to black

2.5/5 stars rounded down

It was definitely my fault for not looking more into this book. It contained a trope that I don't find any enjoyment in (the arranged marriage kind) so that was on me for why I couldn't really get into the second half of this book. I did, however, know this was a Reylo fanfic while going into it, which I can see traces of throughout the book. I think the author did great it creating a brand new world from a story that has an established universe she would have to rewrite from scratch, so kudos for that! There were definitely moments where the setting fell flat for me but I can't and won't judge harshly.

However, I can't say that I found any of the characters likable. The FMC is extremely one dimensional and at times, even frustratingly annoying in the decisions she makes. And the MMC is simply dark and moody - there wasn't much exploration into who he really was other than that he was emo. With the foreknowledge that this is a Reylo fanfic, it definitely helps shape the characters a little more, but this isn't a fanfic and so I shouldn't have to do that in order to understand the decisions that were made by the characters. And like with most Romantasy-genre books, the romance and relationship between the two MC were a tad bit too instalove sprinkled with half-assed hate. The nature of this romance was also difficult to wrap my head around. Because of this story's past as a fanfic, I know that it would be extremely hard to write their relationship without having some sort of moral conundrum about it. That's another reason why I have an issue with the instalove - there was too much internal whining from the FMC about how she was betraying her friends by thinking about the MMC's lips or striking eyes.

Like, bffr here.

I was also confused by how some of the marketing for this book. I kept seeing people mention that there Asian fantasy elements weaved throughout the setting, and as someone who unabashedly loves Asian fantasy, I picked up the Hurricane Wars thinking exactly that. Instead, I couldn't really cement what things were supposed to look like and things were getting a little too convoluted - it was a strange mixture of Asian but also European influences that threw things off.

Do I recommend? No, not really, but for those who do love books within this Romantasy genre, you'll probably like it a lot more than I did.

The only thing I know about Reylo is Adam Driver so I guess that's why the MMC is so tall. I was expecting more dragons, but I enjoyed it
