TLDR: A nice get-away when things are just too much for a few hours.

I think this may be another Kindle Unlimited thing. Having read some author blogs and an "Atlantic" article I am still conflicted over the role Amazon is playing in book publishing.

At the smallest print (I read the e-book) this is 251 pages long on my phone, so more of a novella than a novel. If you have a passing familiarity with early 20th century British slang it is a quick and easy read. The author may be mildly criticised for using slang a bit too much along with some character names that are a little on the nose.

This is the first in a series, that are being published rather soon after the last. The publisher is an Amazon imprint, I'm not sure how much editing support there is. I did not find any jarring spelling, punctuation, or grammatical errors. (Unlike my reviews.) The characters were interesting if a bit too quirky. Descriptions were a little lacking The plot was engaging. Characters mostly acted in a believable and consistent way.

There were a few plot holes. The one that bothered me the most was that one character very quickly made a 180ยบ change in attitude. The two main characters were also a little less discrete and street-wise than I would have expected given the hints to their past.

I read this because of a random BookTuber and my early love for Agatha Christy, Ngaio Marsh, and Dorothy L Sayers. "A Quiet Life in the Country" does not have the rampant racism that the earlier authors did but classism plays an important part in the solution to the mystery. Classism is also played for laughs Ala Lord Peter Whimsey and Bunter. I am wondering about the possible connection to BookTubers and Amazon.

For those that benefit from trigger warnings. There is/are murder(s), the method(s) and body(ies) are discussed but not graphically described. No children or animals are harmed and none take a major role in the story. There is no romance, sex, or police brutality.Police are seen as the good guys for the most part. Race is not mentioned, mild sexism is present in some male characters, classism has been discussed.
