"The heart makes dreams seem like ideas."

For my English Literature A-Level coursework, we were asked to choose a book that explored themes of political and social protest. Having watched ‘Winter’s Bone,’ in A-Level Film Studies and subsequently finding out that it had been based on a book, I decided to give it a go. The story revolves around Ree Dolly, a 16-year-old girl who lives in the Ozarks of Missouri. When the breadwinner of her family, her father, goes missing, she feels it’s her duty to go looking for him in order to save her home which has been put up as bail collateral by her father.

Though some may view this book as quite mundane and lacking in action, I loved the themes of poverty, family, community, isolation, and gender roles which are explored. Overall, it was a great choice of book for my A-Level coursework – there was just so much to discuss in terms of the political and social protest themes.

Though the book lacked action, it still had an ability to create and sustain tension and suspense, keeping me engaged and eager to uncover the truth of the mystery. Woodrell’s exploration of themes such as family dynamics, morality, and economic hardship were truly eye-opening and I hope more people come to appreciate the excellence of this novel.

A beautifully written, raw tale of family and survival. I didn't expect to love this book as much as I did. The prose is gorgeous. A short book that packs a hell of a punch.

Bleak, haunting, lyrical, and unforgettable. I absolutely couldn't stop reading until the very last page and even then, I wanted more. It's hard to say which I loved more--Woodrell's incredible prose or Ree Dolly's uncrushable spirit.

Eh. When I started the book was appealing, but as I got farther in I lost interest. Plus, to me, certain events seemed pointless to me. I kept asking myself: why are they doing this? Why did she do that? Why was this and that?
I don't know. It just wasn't my cup of tea.
