Read as part of research for a Microsociology class.

As someone who shoulders a large amount of emotional labor, both at home and at work, this really hit home. The examples and case studies did a great job of bringing home each point, and the writing was clear and concise. I'd love to see it make more corporate reading lists.

Not as well written as some of Hochschild's more recent work but still a fairly spectacular bit of theory.

  • got this as a gift from my sociology professor! technically i won it but whatever
  • the professor had assigned chapter 8 for us as reading and when i did the reading i was so entrenched and i loved it so much that i wanted to read the whole thing online but i ended up getting a physical copy which was so nice
  • first nonfiction book i’ve read in a while and i honestly don’t know how to rate nonfiction books
  • i will say that chapter 8 is the best chapter and that i was really hoping the rest would be like chapter 8 but the first half is just setting everything up and explaining all the terms and concepts and i found those less interesting and i probably would’ve skipped over a few chapters or at least skimmed them
  • there were also definitely some parts i didn’t fully get and so i was kind of confused sometimes and also it’s a lot of new terminology that i wasn’t used to
  • it’s a feminist text and i loved reading the parts that really dived into the emotional labour of women (most of the book was on the emotional labour of women but some parts more than others) and i did a lot of highlighting and i wrote a bunch of comments in the margins and it made me hate men and this patriarchal society more
  • overall i liked it and it was really enlightening. i don’t know if i’d re-read the whole thing anytime soon but i’d definitely revisit chapter 8 and a few chapters
