Surprisingly progressive for it's time, this book takes morbid and dark themes and wraps them up in a compelling cat and mouse game. The characters and writing are clever, and the progression of the story flows in a way that sucks you and and makes you want to keep reading just to know what happens next. Chapters vary greatly in length, adding punchy beats and never giving away more than necessarily until the next POV comes around. At first I was dissatisfied with the seemingly quick ending, but after sitting with it I'm entirely pleased. The point was not the ending, but the content and development made long before.

I enjoyed this book more than the first one. The characters feel more fleshed out.
I liked Clarice's inner monologue and though it was written by a man in the 80's, I didn't find it to be problematic or misogynistic.
It was nice to see more of Hannibal in this one, too.

This is a hard one to assign a star rating to. On one hand it’s a genuinely phenomenal thriller. On the other hand, it was so clearly written in the 80’s and some aspects have NOT aged well.

The latent transphobia was difficult to read. But that being said — I was actually surprised with how the novel made a point to emphasise that Buffalo Bill was not a “real” trans person and that trans people are not dangerous. So… points for that, I guess? With some big minus points for paving the way for the “man in a dress killing women” trope.

Likewise, there were some real “men writing women” moments in this book. And some fatphobia. Just some classic moments of, yeah wow this book really was written 35 years ago.  But I’ve honestly seen far worse in far more recent media, and I’m hesitant to use “it could be worse” as a reason to tip my hat but… well. For 1989, it really could be worse.

The dynamic between Hannibal and Clarice is great. Both characters are phenomenal in isolation and electric in tandem. Hannibal’s escape scene is perhaps one of the most exciting chapters ever written in any crime novel.

This is a 4/5 granted with acknowledgment of the flaws this book has, and awareness of its context.

[Edit: adjusted to 3.5/5]

For Close Encounters book club.

There's a review on Goodreads that says this is the crime novel against which all others are judged.

Not enjoyable in any way, completely unpleasant, but also compelling and tense, so that I read pretty much all of it in three days.

Half a point lost because of the fat phobia. Doesn't age well.

One thing to say: NEVER get into a stranger's vehicle!

Hannibal Lecter: period blood eyes, teeth like a row of tic-tacs, built like a ballerina, and no taller than five-foot-two.

showed its age more than red dragon, but i found clarice starling a bit more compelling than will graham. can definitely tell harris has grown to like certain characters more, and he writes thrillers like a journalist - extreme attention to detail, almost pedantic at times. except in the matters of women’s weight - “she was a large woman - 145 pounds!! so hefty!!!” listen i get it was the eighties and everyone was on stuff but come onnnnn thomas
