Such a heart wrenching story about Victor and his journey to the United States. I’m so lucky and privileged that I didn’t have to ensure those types on condition on my own journey to this country. We all come to this country for a better life and we’re willing to do whatever it takes to survive.

Very topical and I appreciate the passion the author clearly has into the issue of immigration. I appreciated the idea of showing clearly the journey immigrants make to get into the USA, no matter the length and danger. As an adult reading this book, it was frustrating but I understand why the journey is so endless, but I think young adult readers might not be as tolerant/understanding. Perhaps this issue could be alleviated by reading it with an adult to discuss why the book is written in such a manner. All in all, important book that gives a much needed perspective.

Not a page turner, had to put it down many times to finish it. Wouldn’t recommend this book because of its slow pace.

Another very real life book that's extremely eye opening. I just hate how it's so open-ended, but that is life.

Desperation drives a Mexican teen to make the dangerous trek across the border with the United States. Victor has practically nothing when he starts out, and is driven on by the need to raise money to feed his family. I didn't think the beginning (set in a fictional village where Victor grew up) was very good, but the story worked once Victor got on his way - especially the survival elements. The dilemmas Victor faces along the way also raise some interesting questions. Just how far is he willing to go to make it in America? Are there any better options available to him?
