I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved the story. The characters were really interesting. I must admit I was a little disappointed in the ending. SPOILER ALERT!!! I was really hoping the the main characters would end up together.
Luminous writing and extremely strong characters. Although the situations described were not always happy, I sat with a smile on my face while reading this for the sheer beauty and enjoyability of the writing--and ordered a copy of Gowda's earlier book before I was half way through! A hidden gem.

Strong character development:
No
this started off really strong and then somewhere around halfway through it felt like it was nonstop traumatic event after traumatic event, without the characters doing any processing. when that’s the case, i wonder what the point of the traumatic event even is and it starts to feel like the trauma is being sensationalized
lack of character depth, unexplored storylines, and so many contradictions
I enjoyed the learning about rural culture and reading Anil’s assimilation to the US. Leena’s story was equal (if not more compelling) to Anil’s so I was interested throughout.

– Not in chess and not in life. You can't undo a mistake after it's made. Choose wisely before you move. –
– You can never fix [a crack] completely. Clay has a memory. Once it's scarred, the heat helps it remember. –
– He was a dweller of two lands, accepted by none. –
– Marilyn looked out the window. "Everybody wants me to fight. They say I'm a fighter." She turned back to Anil. "But you've got to decide what's worth fighting for, right?"
– "But here's the difference [between my doctor friend in Australia and doctors in America], Charlie continued. "Jeremy goes surfing every morning before work, he has dinner with his wife most nights, and they travel all the time because he's on call only every other weekend. He works to live, y'know? Here, everyone lives to work." –

A foot in two countries
A young man grows up in India and becomes a doctor in the US. The strengths and the darkness in each land are explored in a compassionate tale that is compelling and rich in detail. This is a fabulous story for a dark time in the history of race relations in the US and a good reminder for all of us that people are, after all, people, no matter where they are.
